So it can be quite a challenge to upgrade from a Windows small business server with Exchange to Office 365 email.. especially if the company used their internet domain as their microsoft windows domain.. Active Directory has account information that will point outlook to the internet Exchange server. You can go into the Exchange Management console to 'disable the account' that will remove the exchange info without deleting the account, for safety then create a new account and tie the mailbox to that newly created account so it doesn't get deleted.. Create pst files and then upload them to the new Office 365 account mailboxes and connect the user's with new profiles in outlook to the office 365 email... it can be quite challenging.. this last one I did I had to work with Microsoft and they had to escalate, but figured out the steps above and was able to resolve the issue over the weekend before getting a call on Monday from Microsoft... but all is done and working well now!
