The Amazon Echo listens for the word 'Alexa'.. The News keeps spouting off Amazon Echo randomly records conversation of a family and send it to a random contact.. To do this you have to say 'Alexa, send a message' Echo replies, "To Whom?" You have to say someone in your contact list, it will then record and send it to another Alexa user (They have to have the App or another Amazon Echo) This is much harder to do than to randomly butt dial someone, but because there are so many paranoid people out there, the news is reporting it like Echo's are spying on you. They are not. But it would be wise to turn off the microphone if you are having so many people talking so loud that you can't hear the echo or see it's lights.
